WGTS 91.9 Listeners Give Toys for Angel Tree
Story by Jerry Woods
Dozens of listeners gave hundreds of toys for WGTS 91.9’s Salvation Army Angel Tree toy drive. The WGTS 91.9 team broadcasted live from the Laurel, Maryland Walmart for four hours. In that time dozens of listeners gave hundreds of toys.
“This was the first time we partnered with Walmart, so we didn’t know what to expect,” says Jitesh Ram, community engagement director. “The store was so accommodating. Close to 10 employees, including several managers, went shopping with their own money and their employee discount to make sure that the toy drive went well.”
“Listeners started arriving with entire shopping cards full of toys before we even started the broadcast, and they didn’t stop coming until after it was over,” says Jerry Woods, promotions director.
This year the Salvation Army Angel Tree Project will serve 12,500 underprivileged children in the greater Washington, D.C. area over the Christmas holiday. Parents will be allowed to come down to the Salvation Army Warehouse to shop for items that they can wrap and give to their kids directly.
“We are overjoyed and feel blessed by the great response and awesome generosity of WGTS listeners to last Friday’s toy drive,” says Ken Forsythe, public relations manager for the Salvation Army. “For the families we serve at Christmas, this will help to lift a financial burden off of the shoulders of locally struggling families. Thank you for doing the most good for those most in need.”
