All in the Tune: Homero Salazar Shares His Musical Talents

Homero Salazar, pastor of Potomac Conference’s Washington Spanish church in Silver Spring, Md., has a habit of writing theme songs for training events. His newest tune, “Es todo en todo (It’s All in All),” was used at the Columbia Union Conference’s recent lay evangelism festival “Vivangelismo 2015.” Learn more about his musical talent:

Visitor: How many theme songs have you written over the years?

Salazar: Since I arrived at the Potomac Conference in March 2006, I have composed two songs per year, including one for a lay congress and another for a Women’s Ministries meeting. Counting the [recent Columbia Union Conference Hispanic union evangelism event theme song "All in All," I have composed about 20 hymns for events and about 40 songs.

Desde que llegue a la Potomac Conference en Marzo del 2006 he compuesto 2 cánticos por año. Uno para el congreso laico y otro para el congreso del ministerio de la mujer. Incluyendo el congreso de la Unión "Es todo en todo" son unos 20 himnos compuestos para eventos y unos 40 canticos compuestos durante estos 9 años que estoy en la Potomac Conference.

Visitor: Why did you start writing the songs?

Salazar: I was born in a home of musicians and poet parents. I learned very young to play musical instruments, such as the accordion, guitar and a little piano, but making music, of course, was for the world. But at 19, I met Christ through the Adventist Church and I handed myself over to Him. I started to compose and sing my songs to the Lord and for the edification of His church.

In 2006 … while helping with Hispanic camp meeting, I realized the need to sing a new song. I remember that night I asked Rubén Ramos if the event had a theme song, and he told me no. Although the event had already started, I told him, "If you allow me to compose a song, tomorrow morning the congregation will be singing the theme song.” That night, in prayer and with the inspiration of the Lord, I wrote the first theme song for Hispanic Ministries titled "How Important is Jesus.” From that moment, I became the official composer of all theme songs Hispanic Ministries. Some of my compositions are being sung in Inter-America, South America and Europe.

Yo naci en un hogar de padres músicos y poetas. Desde muy pequeño aprendí a tocar instrumentos musicales, como el acordeón y la guitarra y un poco el piano, por supuesto la música que hacía era para el mundo. Pero a mis 19 años conocí a Cristo a través de la iglesia adventista y me entregue a él, y a partir de ese momento le dedique mi talento y empece a componer y cantar mis canciones para el Señor y para la edificación de su iglesia, Creo que como pastor y evangelista que ama la música y la composición, esta ha sido de gran ayuda para la ganancia de las almas y para la edificación de la iglesia. En el 2006, despues de haber trabajado en diferentes lugares de sudamerica e interamerica, la Potomac Conference me hizo la invitación para ser el pastor de la Washington Spanish SDA Church. Ese año participando del campestre hispano me di cuenta de la necesidad que se tenía de cantar un cántico nuevo. Recuerdo que aquella noche me acerque al pastor Ruben Ramos y le pregunte si para el evento tenían un cántico lema, el me dijo que no, y aunque el evento ya habia comenzado, le dije: "si me permites componer un cántico, mañana por la mañana la congregación estará cantando el cántico lema". Esa noche en oración y con la inspiración del Señor compuse el primer cántico lema del Ministerio hispano titulado "Lo importante es Jesús". Asi fue que a partir de ese momento , me convertí en el compositor oficial de todos los canticos lema del ministerio hispano, hasta hoy. Algunas de mis composiciones se están cantando en sudamerica e interamerica y se que tambien los ministerios hispanos en europa están usando los cánticos.

Visitor: Will you be writing any other songs in the near future?

Salazar: Yes, no doubt. But, I not only compose congregational songs, I also do songs for personal edification. Currently I am working on a production where the guitar will be the basic instrument. The production will be of songs that help us reflect. There will not be many instruments playing. The content will be the most important with spiritual singing.

Si, sin duda compondré los proximos canticos lemas. Pero no solo soy un compositor de canticos congregacionales, también hago canciones para edificacion personal. En estos momentos estoy trabajando con una proxima producción donde la guitarra sera el instrumento basico. La producción será de canticos que nos ayuden a reflexionar, no habran muchos instrumentos sonando. El plan es que la guitarra sea de apoyo al contenido de cada canción, el contenido será lo mas importante, serán canticos biblico y cristocentricos.
