At the recent Adventist Community Services of Greater Washington (ACSGW) walkathon, held at Washington Adventist University (WAU) in Takoma Park, Md., ACSGW raised $700 to assist low-income families.

Thanks to a fortuitous break in the rainy weather during the morning hours, participants ran or walked the 5K or 10K routes through nearby Sligo Creek Park. The fastest through the courses won trophies, and the money raised will help support ACSGW programs for families in need in the community.

Jenny Matias and Cindy Ascencio, WAU student interns at ACSGW, spent weeks organizing the event with the assistance of ACSGW staff and volunteers. WAU nursing students checked participants’ blood pressure, and volunteers distributed snacks, water and T-shirts.
