How to Start Running
Story by V. Michelle Bernard
In a WebMD article, Matt McMillen encourages new runners (and those whose haven’t run in a while) to start slowly.
He offers the following tips:
Watch Your Diet
Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least 64 ounces of liquid each day and eating a “small, sugar-boosting snack 30 minutes before exercising,” says Jeff Galloway, a columnist for Runner’s World and author of Women's Complete Guide to Running, which he co-wrote with his wife, Barbara.
Get an Exercise Buddy
Stay connected with friends while staying in shape.
Pace Yourself
Don’t overdue it by being overly enthusiastic early on.
Walk AND Run
Galloway says beginning runners should run for 5 to 10 seconds each minute, walking for the rest of the minute. Then gradually increase the ratio to include more running. He adds that “walking is the best cross-training.”
Gain, Not Pain
Galloway advises new runners to start with a slow and easy approach, monitoring aches and pains. He also added if you’re huffing and puffing at the end, you’ve done too much.
