Connecting Columbia Union Seventh-day Adventists

From One Classroom to Senior Academy

Story by Beth Villanueva

Born from the vision of parents and church members who desired a Christ-centered education, on September 8, 1958, Atholton Adventist Academy (AAA) opened its doors with one teacher, Jean Bankes, and 13 students. What began in a single classroom has grown into a vibrant pre-K3 through 12th grade school serving 234 students, supported by 32 dedicated staff members, including 21 teachers. Today, AAA continues to serve families across Columbia, Md., in Howard County, and the surrounding region, providing an environment where students thrive academically, spiritually and socially.

“AAA remains deeply committed to educational excellence and mission-driven learning,” says Principal Miya Kim. The school is fully accredited by the North American Division (NAD), the National Council for Private School Accreditation, and the Middle States Association, reflecting AAA’s long-standing dedication to high standards and Christ-centered education.

On November 30, 2025, AAA reached a historic milestone when the NAD Adventist Accreditation Association approved its application for Senior Academy Candidacy Status, marking a significant step in expanding the high school program.

Before pursuing expansion, AAA conducted a careful, multi-year feasibility study to determine whether another Adventist high school was needed, especially with two established academies nearby. Through parent surveys, demographic study, data analysis and financial modeling, strong evidence emerged that families in the Columbia and Baltimore regions would benefit from an additional Adventist academy. Many indicated they would remain at Atholton if grades 11 and 12 were available. The school’s decision to expand reflects collaboration with the broader mission of Adventist education, strengthening opportunities for youth and supporting the needs of the Chesapeake Conference.

This milestone positions AAA for continued growth as it expands high school offerings, strengthens facilities and furthers its mission of providing Christ-centered education.

To support this expansion, AAA is also embarking on a major building project: a new Early Childhood Learning Center with three classrooms, dedicated storage and improved campus organization with distinct wings for each division—early childhood, elementary, middle and high school. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the 2026–27 school year, enhancing the school’s capacity and learning environment.

Since 2022, AAA has worked diligently on the candidacy process, partnering with Griggs International Academy to strengthen its program and prepare for this next chapter.

Kim shares, “We are deeply grateful for the church, school community and God’s guidance, whose support and prayers have sustained this journey.”
