Shine the Light

Story by Matt Stroup, Media Ministries Director

Every day, people in Pennsylvania are searching for answers about the Bible on YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. They’re not walking into churches; they’re typing questions into search engines at midnight. Pennsylvania Conference’s media ministry exists to be there when they do.

But here’s what most people don’t realize about how social media works: The algorithm doesn’t amplify content to strangers on its own. It needs a signal first. When Pennsylvania members watch, comment on, like and share videos produced by the conference, the platforms interpret that engagement and starts pushing content to people who’ve never heard of the conference. The members are the ignition switch. Before a seeker ever finds content from the conference, people need to show up on the platforms.

That’s the engine behind Shine the Light—and it’s already working.

Pennsylvania Conference’s YouTube analytics tell a story they didn’t fully anticipate. Nearly 78 percent of watch time comes from non-subscribers—viewers to which the algorithm served the content because members were engaging with it. And who’s watching? Overwhelmingly, 87 percent are young males, with the 25–34 age group making up 35 percent of all views. Young men seeking biblical truth are one of the hardest demographics to reach through traditional outreach. But the conference is reaching them.

Three ministries form the backbone of this strategy.

  • Winsome Witnessing, the conference’s lay evangelism training course, is now available through the Adventist Learning Community, which equips members to engage with confidence and grace, both online and in person.
  • Prophecies of Hope, the 27-episode Bible study series on YouTube and TikTok, gives seekers a place to go deep on Scripture once curiosity is sparked.
  • And the soon-to-launch flagship program, Busting Bible Myths, meets people right where the questions already live, tackling topics like “What Happens at Death?” “Who Is the Antichrist?” and “The Sabbath,” with the kind of factual, no-nonsense approach that earns trust with skeptical viewers.

When a seeker engages by leaving a comment, requesting a Bible study or visiting any of the Busting Bible Myths platforms, the conference’s volunteer digital media team responds personally, building the kind of relationship that connects people to local churches and to Jesus.

Digital evangelism doesn’t replace personal witness, but for millions in Pennsylvania, it’s how that relationship begins.
