Youth Congress Results in 40 Baptismal Pledges

Story by LaTasha Hewitt

Earlier this year, more than 680 young people and chaperones gathered for Allegheny East Conference’s Youth Congress at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Md., themed, “Foundations—Faith, Fulfillment, and Fortitude.”

On Friday evening, attendees enjoyed praise and worship music from recording artist Samantha Howard and a vespers thought by Vandeon Griffin, associate director for Youth and Young Adults at the North American Division. Many young people responded to the appeal, and Trevor Kinlock, AEC president, prayed over those who came forward.

On Sabbath, attendees enjoyed a worship experience featuring more music from Howard, as well as a message from Laurent Grovesner, pastor of the Alpha church (Texas). Following his appeal, 40 individuals responded to his call for baptism. Seven young people were baptized that afternoon in an indoor pool at a nearby hotel. Others arranged to be baptized at a later time at their local churches.

Following the service, the young people attended sessions on topics such as financial wellness, leadership, biblical womanhood/manhood and spiritual growth. “We equipped our youth with tools to not only strengthen their faith but also navigate life with purpose and confidence,” says Ramone Griffith, AEC youth director.

Later that evening, following a live podcast, a social gathering included karaoke, a talent show, a performance by AEC’s drum corps and other games and activities.

On Sunday, the congress wrapped up with a brunch, featuring food, activities and a sneaker competition, in which attendees modeled their favorite pair of sneakers.

The impact of the conference was designed to reach far beyond one weekend. “Our goal was to inspire, empower and challenge them to stand firm in their faith, and by God’s grace, we accomplished that and more,” says Griffith. “The hope is that the seeds planted will continue to grow, shaping future leaders who are rooted in Christ as we continue building, brick by brick.”

The feedback received from one parent is evidence that this was, indeed, accomplished. “[My child] had the best time! She enjoyed the seminars, the worship, the meals and the social! She said she learned so much and took so many notes. It was a blessing to see my child excited about Jesus! She definitely came home wanting to seek Him more. She asked for a new Bible so she can study and picked one out last night.”
