Elementary Students Raise Money to Save Mount Vernon Academy

The potential closing of Mount Vernon Academy (MVA) in Mount Vernon, Ohio, is touching many hearts, including those of Mount Vernon Elementary students, who aspire to one day attend the academy. During a recent morning assembly, principal Kim Clarke and eighth-graders Halseigh Thomas, Sarah Houdashelt and Jessie Lee recently presented two special gifts to Dan Kittle, MVA principal.

Third through fifth-graders gave the first gift of $80. One of the third-graders brought her entire savings in a plastic carton and also encouraged her classmates to give. The students also donated money from their allowances.

The eighth-grade class donated the second gift of $200. They raised the money by selling cake pops and brownies during lunch. "Our MVE students wanted to do something to help. I am touched by their generosity," says Clarke.
