WGTS 91.9 Teams Up With Listeners to Take Care of Haitian Orphans
Story by Jerry Woods
WGTS 91.9 listeners gave from the heart again by sponsoring children in Haiti during a recent Micah Tyler concert in Virginia. For the last few years, WGTS has worked side by side with Holistic Haitian Alliance (HHA) to support the Kay Anj Village in Haiti.
For three years the station helped to raise money for HHA by rappelling off the top of a hotel in Tysons Corner, Virginia, for an event called “Over the Edge.” This year, the two organizations decided to do a benefit concert instead.
When Micah Tyler heard about it, he was all in. “When WGTS called and said we want you to help listeners catch the vision for taking care of children in Haiti, I said if there’s any way I can make it happen, I will. Anything this important, I want to be a part of,” said Tyler.
In the middle of the show, Tyler introduced Debbie Harvey, the president of HHA. She shared how, 15 years ago, God called a stay-at-home mom to start a ministry to take care of orphans in Haiti, and she’s been doing it since then. WGTS listeners caught that vision and sponsored 30 children that night.
“We had just had a major snowstorm, and didn’t know if we should cancel the event,” says WGTS director of marketing Jerry Woods. “But because this was so much more than a concert we knew we wanted to give listeners this opportunity. And while the attendance was lower than I would have liked, the lives of these Haitian children were still changed. That made it all worth it.”
