7 Ways to Rewire Your Mind and Schedule
“The way in which our brains work is being changed by the electronic age, and often not for the better,” says Bonnie Heath, an extended care planner with 30 years experience as a mental health therapist. Too much time in front of electronic screens (TVs, computers, tablets) decreases brain stimulation and can heighten distractibility, which can lead to depression and anxiety, leaving some less likely to get involved.
Alternatively, better time management can create a balanced life. Heath, a member of Allegheny East Conference’s Walnut Street Community church in Pottstown, Pa., says that by disconnecting from “the rat race” and devoting energy to a good cause (like that position at church you were asked to lead), you may not only feel better but also “you just might achieve peace, satisfaction and happiness even in a stressful, troubled world.”
She lists the following remedies to an overly distracted and uncommitted life:
1. Eat healthfully and make time for exercise.
2. Limit daily screen time to two hours.
3. Listen to classical music at least 30 minutes a day.
4. Do puzzles and other brainteasers.
5. Read non-fiction to stimulate the mind. The Bible, especially Psalms and Proverbs, are a great place to start.
6. Regularly take time to learn a new skill or language.
7. Organize your schedule to allow time for devotion to a greater cause or to help others.
