Finding Hope in the Midst of Loss
Story by Debra C. Anderson
Just two weeks after his installation at the Renewed church in Aspen Hill, Md., Pastor Paul Graham found himself leading his new congregation through an unexpected season of grief. Within 14 days, four members passed away, leaving the church family navigating what many described as compounded loss.
Recognizing the need for care and understanding, the church hosted a community seminar titled “Complicated Grief.” Held at Renewed, the gathering created space for open conversation while offering practical tools for those processing loss. It also brought together both faith and behavioral health perspectives, reminding attendees that healing often requires attention to the whole person.
What made the seminar especially meaningful was the involvement of Graham’s two brothers: Garry Graham, a licensed professional counselor and host of the radio program Mental Health Manna, who served as the featured speaker, and Patrick Graham, a Maryland-based counselor specializing in grief and behavioral health and pastor of the Glenridge church in District Heights, Md. They joined the conversation to offer additional clinical insight.
Pastor Paul Graham reflects, “Grief touches every part of our lives, and the church must be a place where people not only learn how to mourn but how to heal. Equipping our community with the tools to navigate loss is essential because spiritual growth and healing … walk hand in hand.”
