Washington Adventist University (WAU) Athletics Department proudly announces the addition of women’s flag football to its athletic offerings, set to debut in Spring 2026. This expansion reflects WAU’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity in women’s athletics, aligning with the rising interest in women’s flag football at both collegiate and national levels.

The introduction of women’s flag football at WAU comes as the sport continues to gain popularity across the United States, following its official recognition by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in 2020. WAU’s decision to launch this program demonstrates the university’s dedication to expanding athletic opportunities and creating exciting new experiences for both student- athletes and the broader campus community.

“We are thrilled to bring flag football to WAU,” said Jered Lyons, Athletic Director at WAU. “As an emerging sport, it has already made significant strides through NAIA’s initiative to encourage more young women to participate in sports. This program will enhance our campus experience and allow us to connect with prospective students in fresh, dynamic ways. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Spence and VP Farley for their support in making this vision a reality.”

The women’s flag football team will join a robust lineup of WAU women’s sports, including soccer, volleyball, cross country, softball, acro-airs, and basketball. To foster a local pipeline of talent, the Athletics Department will partner with area high schools to host clinics and recruitment events, encouraging local players to consider a future in collegiate flag football.

The inaugural season aims to feature a roster of approximately 15-20 players, with a comprehensive training focus on agility, strategy, and core flag football fundamentals. WAU’s Athletics Department is committed to recruiting an experienced coaching staff to support the team’s growth and success, beginning

with a search for a head coach who brings expertise and a passion for developing women’s flag football.

As excitement builds for the team’s first season, WAU is preparing to engage both the campus and the local community. Plans are underway for a highly anticipated home opener and special community events, inviting fans to experience the energy of women’s flag football and rally around the latest addition to WAU’s athletic programs. Local supporters, alumni, and families will have the opportunity to attend games and cheer on the new team.
