WGTS Delivers Thousands of Mother’s Day Cards
Story by WGTS Staff
Thousands of often forgotten moms in the Washington D.C. received Mother’s Day cards thanks to WGTS 91.9 listeners. For the last six weeks, WGTS encouraged listeners to make and bring Mother’s Day cards to WGTS remotes across the area. The station partnered with area women’s homeless shelters and domestic abuse shelters to get these cards into the hands of women on Mother’s Day.
"When we started this project I was hoping we would get at least a thousand cards to pass out. At last check listeners have now given over 11,000 cards," says WGTS Program Director Brennan Wimbish.
"There were literally cards in every corner of the station," said WGTS Promotions Director Jerry Woods. "We had so many cards that we had to expand the number of places that we delivered them too. We started delivering just to women's shelters, but by the time we wrapped up the project we had delivered to shelters, nursing homes, hospitals, social services, and other ministries within a 100-mile radius of the station. Our listeners really believed in this project and boy did it show!"
"Reading the inside of the cards and seeing the precious children's handwriting in crayon was heart-warming. We are incredibly grateful for the moms that brought their families together to help other moms and to make a difference in our community," remarked WGTS Afternoon Show Host Stacey Stone who spearheaded the project.
The Mother’s Day card drive is part of the WGTS Hands and Heart Initiative which provides opportunities for listeners to serve others in the Washington D.C. area and around the world.
