Potomac Conference Mourns the Loss of Educator Richard Cooper

The Potomac Conference family has lost one of its most valued members. Richard Cooper, a teacher at the Desmond T. Doss School in Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Rick had been teaching 5th and 6th graders at the Doss school since August 2015. Respected by his colleagues and loved by his students, Rick was passionate about teaching. He believed in ministering to the whole child --academically and spiritually, and he took every opportunity to talk to them about God.

Reflecting on Rick’s life, Stephen Doss, Principal at Desmond T. Doss said, “His impact on DTD is summed up for his love for children and wanting to introduce them to a loving Jesus. His passion was making that connection with them. Rick deeply cared for others. He continually looked for ways to reach the youth of Lynchburg whether it was in Bible or Sabbath School class, providing a way for students who couldn't afford to go to Camp a way to get there, and by continually reaching out and asking for ways he could help.”

Nancy Melashenko, associate superintendent for Education at Potomac, says, “From the very beginning of our initial conversations Rick demonstrated not only an enthusiasm for his students but a complete willingness to do whatever was in his capacity to increase his effectiveness in the classroom. He saw potential and possibility in every situation and expressed an authentic desire to serve others. We are thankful for the time that Rick has spent in educational ministry and trust that the seeds that he has sown will be a rich harvest in the future.”

The Potomac Conference Corporation extends its heartfelt condolences to Rick’s son Sidney, his entire family and his colleagues at the Desmond T. Doss School. While we grieve his passing, we have this hope that we shall see Rick again in the Earth made new.

“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”
